Hazardous Waste - Features
Americans annually generate an average of 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste (HHW) a year. An average American home can also generate and store upwards of 100 pounds of HHW in the basement and garage alone. Many communities have collection programs for HHW to reduce the potential harm posed by the chemicals. Furthermore, excess household products containing toxic or ignitable materials are considered to be HHW. In addition, common household products such as paint, cleaners, oils, and batteries are considered HHWs.
